Shiv Narayan was booked for a Dubai exhibition. For a first-time international show, the owner’s instinct was the most common one in the trade: carry the stock personally on the flight. It feels safe because the jewellery is in your own bag. It also feels simple because it sounds like a one-step problem.
But hand-carry is not actually one step. It is: prepare export invoices, prepare product photos and value declarations, get Indian customs clearance before the flight, travel with the cleared consignment as accompanied baggage, and then clear it again on the destination side on landing — in this case UAE customs at Dubai. Any one of those steps going wrong and the stock sits at an airport instead of at the exhibition stall.
BVC’s job on that first trip was to run the entire customs and support the documentation chain so the hand-carry actually worked. Everything the owner didn’t want to deal with — paperwork, clearance windows, overseas handover — was handled in the background. That’s what changed the mind.
