Understanding Wholesale Distribution

The Wholesaler's Job Is To Get The Right Piece To The Right Retailer. Ours Is To Get It There Safely.

Wholesalers, jobbers, and distributors sit in the middle of India's jewellery trade. They buy from manufacturers and sell to retailers — sometimes on memo, sometimes on order. Every day, they move valuable pieces across cities and states. And every day, something in that movement can go wrong if logistics is not handled carefully.

Think about what a jewellery wholesaler's week actually looks like. On Monday, pieces need to reach three retailers across the same city. On Wednesday, a jobber — a trader who buys in bulk and supplies smaller lots to retailers — needs to deliver a consignment to a buyer in another state. On Friday, unsold memo pieces are coming back from a retailer who didn't close the sale. And somewhere in between, a distributor needs to shift stock from their own godown to a regional collection point before it fans out to five different showrooms.

Every one of these movements carries real risk. The jewellery is valuable. Pieces can get mixed up. Documentation needs to be correct for the destination state. And if a retailer claims a piece was missing on arrival, you need a clear record proving exactly what you dispatched.

BVC is built for precisely this kind of work. We manage the full movement from your premises to your retail customers — with verified lots, proper documentation, GPS tracking, and a signed receipt from every retailer we deliver to. Your stock moves. Your records stay clean. Your retailers receive the right pieces, every time.

"A wholesaler's reputation with retailers is built delivery by delivery. When every piece arrives correctly and on time, that relationship gets stronger. When it doesn't, it frays."

Who This Page Is For

Three Types Of Jewellery Trade Businesses BVC Supports

Wholesaler, jobber, distributor — the names overlap in India's jewellery trade, but the logistics needs are similar. Here is how BVC serves each one.

Type 01

Jewellery Wholesalers

Businesses that buy finished or semi-finished jewellery from manufacturers and sell in bulk to retailers, chain stores, or smaller traders. They typically move large lots to fewer destinations with clear order references.

Example: A Mumbai wholesaler distributing 22K gold jewellery to 12 retailers across Maharashtra on a weekly replenishment cycle.

Type 02

Jobbers

A jobber middleman who buys finished jewellery in bulk from manufacturers or wholesalers and supplies it in smaller lots to retailers. They physically hold stock, take ownership of the goods, and often work on memo — placing pieces at retail counters and collecting whatever remains unsold.

Example: A Jaipur jobber placing diamond jewellery on memo at 8 retail counters in Delhi, then collecting unsold pieces at the end of the week.

Type 03

Regional Distributors

Businesses that receive stock from national suppliers or manufacturers and redistribute it across a region — city by city, retailer by retailer. They often serve as the last link between the supply chain and the retail floor.

Example: A Hyderabad distributor receiving stock from a Chennai manufacturer and delivering to 20 showrooms across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Approach Comparison

What Goes Wrong Without Specialist Logistics — And How BVC Handles It

Moving jewellery between trade points is not like moving ordinary goods. Here is where things break down with basic transport, and what BVC does differently.

Wrong lot reaching the wrong retailer

Common Problem

Multiple retailers' lots are packed together and handed to a basic courier. At delivery, pieces end up with the wrong shop. Sorting them out takes days and damages the wholesaler's relationships with both retailers.

BVC Way

Each retailer's package is individually verified, labelled, and kept separate both physically and digitally throughout transit. System records enable cross-checks to prevent incorrect deliveries, ensuring the right shipment reaches the right retailer every time, with signed confirmation updated in the system.

No proof when a retailer disputes a parcel count

Common Problem

A retailer calls to say one parcel is missing from their delivery. The wholesaler has no clear record of what was packed and sent. The dispute takes weeks to resolve and the wholesaler absorbs the doubt.

BVC Way

BVC verifies the shipment count at collection and secures parcels in sealed bags with unique IDs. Records are maintained at every stage including package weight with signed confirmation at delivery, ensuring complete proof in case of any dispute.

Missing or wrong documentation for inter-state movement

Common Problem

A jewellery consignment crosses state lines without the correct e-way bill or with an invoice error. It gets held at a check post. The retailer misses their sale window and the wholesaler faces penalties.

BVC Way

BVC supports and checks e-way bills, GST invoices, and carrier documentation before the shipment moves. Inter-state jewellery moves with the right papers — not as an afterthought.

Memo pieces not returned on time or with wrong count

Common Problem

A jobber relies on the retailer to send back unsold memo pieces. The return is delayed, some pieces come back without clear documentation, and the jobber cannot tell if the count is right.

BVC Way

BVC manages the return leg with the same rigour as outward delivery — scheduled pickup, verified count, weight checks, and both physical receipts and digital updates for complete reliability.

No visibility across a multi-stop delivery run

Common Problem

A distributor sends a driver with stock for five retailers. Midway through, there is no way to know which drops are done, which are pending, or whether all pieces have reached their destination safely.

BVC Way

Real-time tracking and notifications at every stage, with delivery digitally and physically confirmed, we give the customers complete visibility and proof across the entire multi-stop delivery run.

How It Works

How BVC Moves Jewellery From Your Point To Your Retailers

Five clear steps — from the moment BVC picks up your jewellery to the moment your retailers sign for their pieces.

BVC collects jewellery directly from your showroom, office, or godown. Before dispatch, each lot is verified—counted, cross-checked against documents, and mapped to its destination, with unique IDs, weight checks, and recorded in the system.

Each retailer's lot is then packed and labelled separately, ensuring physical and digital segregation and eliminating downstream errors.

What Happens At This Step

  • Per-Retailer Lot Separation
  • Delivery List Cross-Check
  • Tamper-Evident Sealing
  • Shipment Count

What BVC Gives You

Nine Things BVC Does For Jewellery Wholesalers And Distributors

Understand what each capability means in simple business language.

01.

Verified shipment collection

Accurate parcel count before anything moves.

Every shipment is counted, verified against documents at your premises before it leaves. What reaches the retailer is confirmed. No guessing at either end.

02.

Per-retailer lot separation

Each retailer's pieces stay separate throughout.

From the moment of collection, every retailer's lot is individually sealed and labelled. Even on a multi-stop run carrying stock for eight different shops, each lot stays clearly identified until it is handed to its intended recipient.

03.

Complete documentation support

Paperwork guidance before the vehicle moves.

BVC checks and supports preparation of e-way bills, GST invoices, and carrier documentation for each delivery — particularly for inter-state jewellery movements where a missing or incorrect document can result in delays, fines, or detained cargo at a check post.

India Angle And Regulatory Context

The Paperwork That Must Travel With Every Shipment

Jewellery in India often connects many different cities and business points. That makes clear movement and proper records very important.

GST Invoice — Carried On Every Movement

A self-attested copy of the GST e-Invoice must accompany every consignment of gold and silver jewellery, irrespective of the type of movement. Checkpoint officers rely on this document to verify the sender's tax identity before any other paperwork is examined. BVC attaches this to every consignment file by default.

Branch Transfer (Intra-State) — Delivery Challan

For branch-to-branch movement of jewellery within the same state, a Delivery Challan under Rule 55 of the CGST Rules 2017 is the correct document — not a tax invoice, because no supply has taken place. The challan must carry the reason (“branch transfer”), the value, and the identifiers of both branches.

Branch Transfer (Inter-State) — For Stock Transfer Memo (Delivery Challan)

When jewellery is moved between branches across state lines, GST treats it as a taxable supply. A GST Invoice for Stock Transfer under Rule 46 of the CGST Rules 2017 is mandatory, and IGST applies even though no external sale has occurred. BVC structures these inter-state branch transfers with the invoice, the e-way bill, and the matching insurance declaration as one packet.

Delivery Challan

A Delivery Challan under Rule 55 of the CGST Rules 2017 travels with every high value shipment, without exception. It records what is physically leaving the premises, its value, and where it is going — irrespective of whether a sale is happening, whether it is an internal transfer, or whether the piece is going for repair. Customer generates this challan at the point of dispatch for every single shipment.

No Sale Declaration Of Goods — For Marketing Trips And Exhibitions

A No Sale Declaration of Goods accompanies every jewellery shipment to formally state that the movement itself is not a sale transaction. This protects the jeweller from the consignment being mistaken for an undeclared taxable supply at a checkpoint, and it clarifies the intent of the movement for any officer inspecting the goods in transit. BVC attaches this declaration by default to every consignment file.

E-Way Bill — Triggered By Value & Distance Thresholds

On top of the baseline paperwork, an E-Way Bill is required for inter-state jewellery movement above the prescribed threshold, and for intra-state movement in states that have notified e-way bill requirements for precious metals under CGST Rule 138F. BVC tracks which states have notified this requirement and generates the e-way bill wherever applicable.

HSN Code — Mandatory On Every Invoice & Delivery Challan

The correct HSN code must appear on every GST invoice and every delivery challan that moves with a jewellery consignment. Gold jewellery, silver jewellery, coins, bars and studded pieces each have their own HSN classification, and the code dictates the applicable GST rate and the audit treatment of the consignment. A missing or incorrect HSN is one of the most common reasons a jewellery shipment is held up at a checkpoint or flagged in a post-audit review.

Return Document — When Unsold Memo Pieces Come Back

When a retailer returns unsold memo pieces to the jobber or wholesaler, there should be a clear return document — stating what is being returned, in what condition, and signed by both parties. This keeps the inventory record clean and dispute-proof.

Carrier Document — From The Logistics Provider

BVC provides a carrier document for every movement — stating the lot reference, declared value, origin, destination, and piece count. This travels with the shipment and becomes part of the full movement record for the wholesaler's accounts.

Ask Your Question
  • A jewellery jobber is a trader who sits between the manufacturer and the retailer. They buy pieces from multiple makers and give them to retailers on memo who try to sell the pieces and return what is unsold. Jobbers move jewellery in and out of many retail points very frequently, which makes clear documentation and reliable logistics especially important for them.
